The right accessories can unlock your ATV's full potential and improve your riding experience. But it can be tough to know which upgrades are worth purchasing and which ones are enticing only due to a persuasive sales pitch.

A Winch

One of the most important ATV accessories is a winch, which can be used in many ways. Winches are able to pull vehicles and items from their current location to another location. Get your buddy's quad out of the muddy ditch it got stuck in. Use it on a hunting trip to haul your trophy to a more convenient place for dressing it. You'll be able to use your winch in many different ways on your rides.

Remember that your winch will need to be compatible with your four wheeler's power. Otherwise, you could end up draining your battery. Winches come in synthetic or wire options, so look for the style that best suits your needs.

LED Lights

You rely on your 4 wheelers lights to illuminate your path and make yourself more visible to others on the road. LED lights are able to offer bright beams, drain less power, and last longer than other light styles. They cost more upfront, but you save money in the long run due to their longer lifespan. Just be sure you don't invest in a light setup that overloads your quad's power capabilities and end up draining your battery.

Increased Storage

Sometimes, the default storage capacity on the 4 wheeler is enough. But sometimes owners find that they could benefit from increased storage space. It's easy to add extra cargo capacity to your ATV. There are plenty of aftermarket storage options that can be purchased and installed, giving you the ability to bring more on your trip. Pack extra snacks and water, extra clothes in case the weather takes a turn, and so on. Just remember to keep your 4 wheeler's weight limit in mind so you don't accidentally exceed it.

A GPS

Sure, your phone comes with a handy map app. But there may be times you venture into a rural area and your phone's location services struggle to determine where you are. Or the location services may work, but it ends up draining your battery quickly.

A better option is to purchase a GPS unit. These can be a great resource on your ride. You can mark important locations, such as the trailhead where your tow vehicle is parked or your favorite route. If you go hunting with your quad, you can mark spots when you scout the area so you can know where to set up your deer stand when hunting season starts. Many GPS units are an affordable purchase and will provide you with consistent coverage so you can always know where you are located. Just be sure to pack some extra batteries.

An Emergency Kit

Accidents and surprises do pop up on ATV rides and you will want to be prepared. Get yourself an emergency kit so you can handle the unexpected situations that arise. Buy a tool kit so you can tackle minor maintenance issues or repairs on the trail. Get a first aid kit so you can handle minor medical emergencies (or handle major medical emergencies until you are able to get to a medical professional). Hopefully, you won't ever need the emergency kit. But if you do, you will surely be glad you packed one!
