ATV Hunting Tips
When you go hunting, you often have to go off the beaten path. That’s why ATVs have become so popular with many hunters—quads take them to the remote locations that other vehicles just can’t reach. Your four wheeler also lets you carry more of your gear and pack your prize with less effort. That’s why many ATV models are built for hunters, especially those who are serious about big game hunting. To check out some awesome ATVs for sale, come to S&N MotorSports in Port Charlotte, Florida. We invite all our patrons from Fort Myers.
Hunting Safety
Any activity that involves guns needs proper safety processes. Keep in mind that it’s not only your safety but also that of fellow hunters in the area. Don’t set up your blind too close to another one; give enough space to other hunting parties to have their own experiences that don’t involve you. Avoid firing your rifle near roads or buildings. Your weapon should be unloaded and cased before you bring it on your ATV. If you’ve never taken a hunter safety course, consider signing up for one before your first trip.
The Right ATV
You can get an ATV that’s specifically meant for hunting or you can get yourself an all-rounder sort of quad and then customize it to make it more suitable for hunting. Hunting can take over all different kinds of terrain so get a 4 wheeler that can handle different types of land. These ATVs have a bit more power to help get up and over slopes and across muddy regions. You also want your ATV to be able to tow and haul cargo. If you have extra passengers, get a two-seater model or make sure everyone has their own ATV.
Obey the Law
Take the time to inform yourself about all the local laws and rules associated with hunting, specifically ATV hunting. Some areas might be restricted to vehicles so you’ll have to park your quad further away and cover it with camouflage so it doesn’t announce your presence to the local wildlife and walk to where you want to set up your blind. Land can be inaccessible for a number of reasons, from ecological protections to mining and logging enterprises that don’t permit hunting. Also look up the rules of a particular hunting area. Most jurisdictions won’t let you ride your ATV with a loaded weapon, so empty your gun before you travel with it.
Handle Difficult Terrain
Make sure you know how to maneuver your ATV properly before you head out to remote locations. There should be a few trails around your area that will make this fun to do. Try and ensure that you’re prepared for slightly rougher terrain while you’re out hunting. There’s a good chance you won’t have nice, cleared paths to travel on.
If you come across a hill, don’t panic and turn around. Just keep going straight, stand up and shift your weight forward. Try to come at it with as much speed as possible and use your momentum to carry you up the hill. Engage the lowest gear possible in four-wheel drive for steady motion that won’t make you spin out. If you’re unsure if your ATV will make it all the way to the top, simply stop and walk the rest of the way.
To come downhill, downshift to your lowest gear in four-wheel drive to slow your vehicle. Avoid slamming on the brakes or turning to the right or left, as this can cause you to slide or tumble. Point your four wheeler forward and lean back while still being able to reach the controls. Apply the brakes intermittently, just enough to keep you from losing control. Never attempt a hill that is muddy or low traction.
Finally, riding over obstacles like large rocks or logs can be tricky, as they can shift beneath your weight, so be careful going over them. Approach the obstacle at a perpendicular angle at a low gear in four-wheel drive. Try to maintain your balance to avoid tipping. This may require you to stand and shift your weight to counterbalance your ATV.
